Debt Settlement

Debt settlement is often the fastest and easiest method of seeking debt relief.  It’s often referred to as debt arbitration or debt negotiation, and it is a direct and ambitious approach to reducing your debt.  This type of debt relief is best suited for those who are considering bankruptcy.

There are two ways you can go about this.  Sometimes a consumer will contact his or her credit card companies outright and seek debt settlement services directly from them.  Normally there is a specific department that handles it and once the consumer is in touch with the correct individuals, the process can begin.  The only problem is that not all companies cooperate as well with individuals as they do with debt settlement companies.

If you go through a debt settlement company, they will contact your creditors on your behalf, requesting that they reduce your balance by a certain amount.  They can negotiate down credit card bills, medical bills, personal loans, judgments and retail store cards.  Once an amount has been decided upon, the debtor will make the necessary payment for the balance owed, and then when that is satisfied the creditors will issue letters to the credit reporting agencies informing them that the debt has been satisfied.

It’s often wondered why creditors would consider taking a lesser amount than what is owed, and do so willingly.  That’s because they understand the seriousness of the situation.  If the debtor has to declare bankruptcy, the creditors will get nothing.  But if they allow the debtor to go through the debt settlement program, they are getting some of that outstanding money paid back to them.  It’s a better alternative for both themselves and the debtor.

Debt settlement is definitely something to consider if you’ve accumulated too much debt and you’re considering filing for bankruptcy. You can reduce your outstanding debt without doing a tremendous amount of damage to your credit score.  It’s certainly something to consider in these tough times.
